The Athletics Dept. at UW-Parkside is proposing a renovation to its weight room facility. Located in the Sports and Activity Center, the weight room hasn't been upgraded in 10 years.
Wednesday, Jan. 19, Athletic Director Tami Falk-Day gave a presentation at Parkside Student Government's (PSG) senate meeting that outlined the department's plan for the construction. She expects the total cost to range between $1.25-1.5 million. The capital equipment cost is estimated at more than $200,000, with an additional $50,000 for technical expenditures.
Falk-Day stressed the need for a more aesthetically attractive facility for recruiting athletes, as well as a more adequate space for students to exercise. She also assured that the renovation would boost enrollment, and improve community participation within the University.
Parkside senators fielded questions to Falk-Day during the presentation. Concerns included that there were no recorded statistics to prove an enrollment increase. Students also questioned whether that money could be spent more effectively on other health services.
If the upgrade were to take place, students at Parkside would pick up the majority of the cost. It's estimated that segregated fees would increase by $36 per student over a 10-year span.
The time frame of the facility's completion is expected to be sometime during the 2011-12 school year.
